In the early 1900s, the Cajuns of South Louisiana made their living by farming the land, fishing the waters, and cutting the timber of the Atchafalaya river basin. When the timber was gone the petrochemical industry came calling. Money brought change - some good, some not. These are a few of those stories.

Lyrics

Growing up on the banks of Bayou blue

Was that old man Stevens owned everything around

But nobody really knew him ‘cause he lived way out of town

Well he built that plant back in eighty three

When the River was dry and work was cheap

And I ain’t sure who’s in the worst shape today

Bayou Blue or Stevens Chemical USA

Cause that old man never put a nickel in

That he didn’t take a dollar back out again

Never mind what the folks who worked there had to say

‘Cause sometimes they just dry up and fade away

And living ain’t living on minimum wage

So you sign your name on a rich man's page

Then it's 8 10 12 til you just can't count no more

Well they bought up the people like they bought up the land

With pretty brick houses and a check in their hand

And a dozen other things  they might not have to pay

Cuz sometimes we just dry up and fade away

Daddy burned rods for the 198

When the fishing dried up and the bills were late

And each day he’d come home and fall right through his chair

Wheezing from the smoke and the sulfur in the air

Now I don’t claim to be a righteous man

But somebody round here got blood on his hands

It don’t always take a bullet to put a man in his grave

Sometimes they just dry up and fade away

And living ain’t living on minimum wage

So you drive to town and you sign that page

And you're glad for the work but you know damn well the cost

There ain't nothing wrong with owning some land

And making a dime off the working man

All we wanna do is go home at the end of the day

And live til we’re done not dry up and fade away

I went off to college and made a few friends

A little bluer round the collar than most of them

But got over it quick - at least that’s what they say

Married a do good Stevens girl from down my way

She never liked the old man anyway

We left Texas when the kids were grown

I took a job with her daddy and we moved back home

Now I sit in this office making sure things go our way

And watch some good ol boys I used to know fade away

Sometimes they look at me and then they walk away

As if I’ve gone and sold my soul away

I can't blame en none but man if they only knew

We got the old man’s money pretty soon we’ll have his company too

Yeah one day soon he’s gonna up and die

And I’ll fall to my knees and look up at the sky

Cuz I’ll know somewhere daddy’s smiling down my way

When I’m running Bayou Blue….Chemicals USA

Cause I’ll be damned if anybody else dries up and fades away

Yeah, I”ll be damned if anybody else dries up and fades away
